Andrew Garfield doesn’t want to go near the role of Joker, citing the brilliant performances of the Clown Prince of Crime by actors such as Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix – the latter two won an Oscar for their portrayals of the Batman villain.

Andrew Garfield doesn’t want to take on Joker role

The Amazing Spider-Man actor, who is strongly rumored to feature in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home movie alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire (who is also being rumored to feature) recently spoke about affiliations between himself and the role of the Batman villain Joker.

Speaking to GQ, Andrew Garfield shut down rumours of him taking on the iconic role of the villain and Batman‘s arch-nemesis. He was asked about potentially portraying the Joker in future Batman movies and possibly opposite Robert Pattinson‘s Batman, Pattinson said that he wouldn’t go near it.

Garfield said that he wouldn’t go near the role of Joker, but thanked people for thinking that it’s possible. He added that he doesn’t think he could ever do what Heath Ledger, Nicholson, and Joaquin Phoenix did with their genius input into the role that garnered them acclaim.

Jared Leto’s Joker

Taking on the role of the iconic villain is no easy feat, with the late Heath Ledger reportedly locking himself up inside a room for a month and keeping a diary to get himself into the psyche of a psychopath – his acting was so convincing and disturbing that when he was shooting scenes with the other actors, they were so disturbed that they even forgot their own lines.

One notable portrayal of the Joker was Jared Leto‘s rendition of the character, with his first appearance back in 2016 being widely panned – critics slammed the portrayal as turning the Joker into an “emo” clown.

Leto has since redeemed himself (somewhat) with a different take on the character during his cameo in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Although it isn’t outrightly clear if Leto will return to the DC Extended Universe as the Joker, he has said that he would be open to doing it again if asked.

With The Batman taking place in the DCEU, the door remains open for a Joker feature in future Batman movies, although as of now it appears that it won’t be Andrew Garfield donning the clown makeup.
