Antonio Conte says Tottenham are not at a high level after his side lost to Slovenian minnows NS Mura during a shockingly humiliating 2-1 defeat in the Europa Conference League (ECL).
Speaking to the media after the defeat, Antonio Conte said that he now understands the size of the job on his hands and emphasized that he is not a magician and that he has a lot to do to improve the situation at the faltering club.
To put things into context, NS Mura are the lowest team in the Europa Conference League; and the league itself is the lowest tier of the European Competitions.
Antonio Conte says Tottenham situation “not simple”
Tottenham were 1-0 down thanks to Tomi Horvat’s goal and later reduced to 10-men after Ryan Sessegnon received a red card in the first half; Harry Kane then brought them level at 1-1 before Amadej Marosa won the game for NS Mura right at the death of injury-time.
Antonio Conte said that after three weeks, he is starting to understand the situation at Tottenham and it is not simple; adding that at the moment, the level at Tottenham is not so high – he acknowledged the gap between his side and the top teams and appealed for time patience as he worked to solve the mounting problems at the club.
He emphasized that just because he won in the past doesn’t mean he is a magician; the only magic that he can do is to work to improve, to bring his methods and ideas of football, and integrate them into the team.
Squad limitations could curtail efforts
Antonio Conte hinted that his targets for the club could be hindered by the limitations of the squad, despite having Korean ace Son Heung Min and England captain Harry Kane (who scored 4 goals against San Marino and became the country’s 4th highest ever goalscorer).
He said that “you can push a car at maximum level and sometimes it is not enough to be competitive” despite having a lot of desire to “work, work, work, work”.
He did however imply that he is in it for the long run, saying that the road could be one meter or one hundred meters, he is not scared; he is ready to go down this path but there is still a lot of work to be done.
Antonio Conte says Tottenham has players that want to work but sometimes it is not enough, once again emphasizing that it is important to know that he is not a “magician”.
