Disney claims that piracy was the cause of Black Widow’s poor performance and they suffer a lot of $600 million.

But most critics out there think it’s completely “Baloney” Black Widow is the worst reviewed Marvel movie, critics say it’s the worse Marvel film yet.

It is sad to hear that Disney lost $600 million on Black Widow. Black Widow was the first new film in Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 plans and it had a budget of $160 million. Originally set to open in theaters on May 1, 2020, the film was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film takes place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War and fleshes out Black Widow’s history as well as introduces new characters to the MCU, like Yelena Belova.

Deadline recently reported that Disney paid a very high price for putting Black Widow on Disney Plus. It was made easy to put clean pirated copies in several languages online. Sources close to Deadline informed them that by August the movie had been pirated more than 20 million times. With the Disney+ Premier Access cost being $30, that is an estimated $600 million in lost revenue from PVOD alone.

The Black Widow film was released to stream on Disney+, which resulted in a lawsuit between Scarlett Johansson and Disney. The movie release divided audiences and received mixed reviews from critics. Marvel Studios took a considerable amount of criticism following the film’s underperformance at theaters, where many directed their frustrations at Disney. In September 2021, not long after its initial release, the movie was taken off of streaming service and its box office earnings fell below expectations. Johansson also filed a lawsuit against Disney claiming that marketing of the film did not support it thoroughly enough to compete with big superhero films. The suit was dismissed for lack of evidence in late 2021 (or early 2022), but Johansson stuck around with Marvel in her role as an executive producer to the new Tower of Terror movie, although she did not act in it.
