Channing Tatum returns
Channing Tatum said in a statement that there are no words for how excited he is to “blow the doors off of the world of Magic Mike with Steven (the director), Greg (the producer), Reid (the writer), and the amazing people at HBO Max.” He posted a photo of Magic Mike’s Last Dance’s script on Instagram and captioned it: “Well world, looks like Mike Lane’s tapping back in.”
Director Steven Soderbergh also expressed his excitement at the upcoming movie, saying that as soon as he saw what Channing, Reid, and the Magic Mike choreographic team did with the live show, he felt that he had to make another movie to realize Mike Lane’s (portrayed by Channing Tatum) dream of connecting people through dance.
The previous movies, Magic Mike (released in 2012) and Magic Mike XXL (released in 2015) was hugely successful, raking in over $300 million globally – it even spawn a live show in Las Vegas, Magic Mike Live, which even expanded to London, Berlin, and Australia.
The huge success of the live shows even spawned a reality competition by HBO, Finding Magic Mike, which follows ten men who “lost their magic” as they look to follow their calling of becoming a male stripper.
The first movie was loosely based on Channing Tatum‘s experiences as a male stripper before he became a mainstay of Hollywood, following the journey of a 19-year-old who enters the world of male stripping under the guidance of Channing Tatum’s Mike Lane in the movie.
The sequel, Magic Mike XXL, was set three years after Mike Lane’s retirement from stripping; with the character missing the excitement of being on stage as well as his best friends from the industry – he then goes to a stripper convention and returns to the scene for one last performance.
And although the plot details of the upcoming Magic Mike’s Last Dance have yet to be officially ascertained, it appears to be focused on following Mike Lane’s journey as he attempts to rejoin the world of stripping again. Based on the title, we assume Channing Tatum’s Mike Lane will be stripping for one last hurrah in the movie.
The movie stars Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey, Olivia Munn, Joe Manganiello, Amber Heard, Jada Pinkett Smith, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Glover and Michael Strahan completing the ensemble cast.
