Drake withdraws nominations – The Canadian rapper has withdrawn his two Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album, for Certified Lover Boy; and Best Rap Performance for Way 2 Sexy featuring Young Thung and Future.
Drake withdraws nominations for 2022 Grammys
A representative for the Recording Academy has confirmed that Drake has withdrawn his two Grammy nominations, although the nominations for his withdrawal remain unclear at the time of writing. As a result, the Grammys will go ahead with just four nominees for the two rap categories that Drake was nominated in. The ballots were posted for voting members on the morning of December 6.
Usually, an artist’s Grammy nomination is submitted by a representative from the artist’s record label and if the artist doesn’t want their name in the hat for the award, the record label doesn’t submit it. However, Drake’s withdrawal after being nominated and announced on the day the ballots are posted is quite unprecedented and has never been done before.
Drake was one of five rappers nominated for Best Rap Album for his work on Certified Lover Boy, as well as being nominated for Best Rap Performance for his song Way 2 Sexy which featured Future and Young Thug.
The reasons for Drake’s Grammy nominations withdrawal are unclear, although that hasn’t stopped the rumors and speculations to come piling in – some netizens have deduced that his withdrawal might have something to do with his name being mentioned in the lawsuits against the Astroworld festival tragedy that saw 10 people killed during Travis Scott’s performance, where he made a guest appearance. However, it seems unlikely as Drake is scheduled to perform with longtime frenemy Kanye West at an LA concert on Thursday.
Perhaps it could be the beef between him and the Grammys – The rapper once famously dissed the Grammys back in 2019 when his song God’s Plan won Best Rap Song, and Drizzy said “we play an opinion-based sport, not a factual-based sport. You already won if you have people singing your songs word for word, if they’re singing in your hometown. You’re already winning, you don’t need this right here.” The producers of the awards show then cut off his mic.
Drake joins a number of artists to have snubbed the Grammys, including rap icon Eminem, who also previously said in an interview that he would never go to the Grammys ceremony again, adding that they “suck the blood out of artists”. Slim Shady also famously rapped: “You think I give a —- about a Grammy? Half of these critics can’t even stomach me, let alone stand me” on his song The Real Slim Shady.
