Premier League title frontrunners Liverpool were brought down to earth with a sorry defeat against West Ham, losing 3-2 at the London Stadium to West Ham.

Liverpool shot themselves in the foot

Liverpool couldn’t have gone about the game in a worse manner, conceding a goal in the 4th minute via an own goal from their goalkeeper, Alisson Becker after failing to deal with an inswinging cross from a corner by Pablo Fornals.

It appeared as though Alisson was fouled by Angelo Ogbonna as the duo came together in an aerial challenge to deal with the cross and Liverpool players were quick to protest the goal.

The protest was put to rest following a VAR check and allowed to stand by Craig Pawson.

A Trent Alexander-Arnold goal from a free-kick and a goal from Divock Origi were mere consolations as Pablo Fornals and Kurt Zouma put the Merseysiders to the sword.

Liverpool’s unbeaten run ends

The loss sees Liverpool’s 25-match unbeaten streak come to a sorry end, with them falling to 4th place in the table and overtaken by their victors West Ham, who leapfrogged them into 3rd place.

This was West Ham boss David Moyes’ first victory against Liverpool in the Premier League across his long managerial career; scoring victories against a myriad of giants this season including Man City, Man United, and Tottenham.

Jurgen Klopp fuming

Speaking to the media after the match, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said that the incident leading to Alisson’s own goal was a “clear foul” and asked “how was that not a foul? The decision is really strange.”

He said that West Ham should have had a red card as well for Cresswell’s reckless challenge on Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson’s knee, Klopp then accused VAR of hiding behind referees with clear and obvious mistakes.

Klopp said that the end of their unbeaten run is the least of his problems, describing it as inevitable and that all unbeaten runs come to an end.

Meanwhile, Arsenal rose to 5th following victory against Watford.
