Naomi Osaka in shock
Naomi Osaka expressed her shock and concern over her tennis colleague Peng Shuai’s disappearance, with the latter alleging on social media earlier this month that she was coerced into an on-off consensual sexual relationship with Zhang Gaoli, a former member of China’s Politburo Standing Committee.
The post then made the headlines and after Peng’s disappearance, the tennis community around the world has been alarmed – The ATP has stood in solidarity with the Women’s Tennis Association’s (WTA) appeal to China to look into the allegations and commence investigations.
Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka then posted onto Twitter, sharing her thoughts as well as a photo of Peng:
China claims she is “not under any physical threat”
Despite having no one speaking to Peng directly since the allegations surfaced and her disappearance, the Chinese Tennis Assiciation assured WTA chief Simon that Peng Shuai was safe and that she wasn’t under any form of physical threat.
Tennis star Novak Djokovic also weighed in on the disappearance as well, calling it “shocking”.
Former CEO of the WTA and CEO of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), added that the tennis world is prioritizing Peng Shuai’s health and safety ahead of business.
