Naomi Osaka was shocked over Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai’s disappearance, following the latter’s allegations that she was sexually assaulted by a former Chinese vice premier.

Peng has not been seen or heard from since the allegations against the vice-premier came to light.

Naomi Osaka in shock

Naomi Osaka expressed her shock and concern over her tennis colleague Peng Shuai’s disappearance, with the latter alleging on social media earlier this month that she was coerced into an on-off consensual sexual relationship with Zhang Gaoli, a former member of China’s Politburo Standing Committee.

The post then made the headlines and after Peng’s disappearance, the tennis community around the world has been alarmed – The ATP has stood in solidarity with the Women’s Tennis Association’s (WTA) appeal to China to look into the allegations and commence investigations.

Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka then posted onto Twitter, sharing her thoughts as well as a photo of Peng:

“I was recently informed of a fellow tennis player that has gone missing shortly after revealing that she has been sexually abused.

Censorship is never okay at any cost, I hope Peng Shuai and her family are safe and okay.

I’m in shock of the current situation and I’m sending love and light her way.

China claims she is “not under any physical threat”

Despite having no one speaking to Peng directly since the allegations surfaced and her disappearance, the Chinese Tennis Assiciation assured WTA chief Simon that Peng Shuai was safe and that she wasn’t under any form of physical threat.

Tennis star Novak Djokovic also weighed in on the disappearance as well, calling it “shocking”.

I don’t have much information about it. I did hear about it a week ago. Honestly, it’s shocking that she’s missing, more so that it’s someone that I have seen on the tour in the previous years quite a few times.

“It’s not much more to say than hope that she will be found, that she’s OK. It’s just terrible. I can imagine just how her family feels that she’s missing

Novak Djokovic

Former CEO of the WTA and CEO of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), added that the tennis world is prioritizing Peng Shuai’s health and safety ahead of business.

In other sports news, England battered San Marino in a sensational 10-0 win and qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
