No Time To Die director wants more real stunts

Speaking during an interview with Variety, No Time To Die director Cary Fukunaga highlighted the importance of using real-life stunts in the Bond movies instead of CGI so as to maintain a greater sense of authenticity when approaching the visual and special effects of the films.

When I first started making movies I tried to stay away from it (CGI) entirely.

As I’ve progressed through my projects, I have come to know the moments when we can do visual effects and have it be seamless because the last thing you want is for a sequence to feel like it’s coming from a different kind of film.

In a Bond film, where stunts are being done for real, where so much of it is tangible and on-screen, you’re much more vulnerable to VFX that somehow undermine that sense of reality that you’re trying to create.

So you have to be much more, judicious in the use of it.”

Movie studios these days are utilizing technology and CGI to get the desired effects that they want because they deem it to be cheaper and less time consuming, as more and more blockbuster movies have a lot of money being invested in them being a success. Green screens and CGI usage are seeing more utilization in movie projects and are becoming very common.

However Fukunaga believes that a movie franchise like Bond needs to have a certain amount of grit and authenticity to it, and that is why many of the James Bond movies’ actions sequences were filmed without the use of special effects.
