Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho hinted at a new sequel in the zombie movie franchise during an interview with Variety, where he spoke about his plans and ideas for the third film, as well as his creative process.

Train to Busan second sequel

Sang-ho, whose recent series on Netflix, Hellbound, has been garnering critical acclaim globally, touched on a few topics during an interview with Variety, including the possibility of a third movie after last year’s Peninsula.

He said that the zombie genre is very traditional but it can be completely new at the same time, depending on what ideas are brought into it. He added that he does have some ideas about how the story can proceed after the events of Peninsula and that it is something that he wants to do.

However, he added that he is busy with a lot of productions and work at the moment and that he would need to organize the ideas that he has and is considering coming up with a system to bring all of his visions to life.

Film series

Sang-ho said that he personally would like to continue Train to Busan as a film series because the circumstances in Korea are not very favorable to create a TV series that can compare to the movie.

Touching on the Train to Busan universe, he said that they all ( the previous movies) become related together, with Peninsula focusing more on the post-apocalyptic car chases and that he wanted to return to a story inside a small and restricted space like the first Train to Busan movie.

He added that in terms of the genre that the new sequel will be heading towards, it will be something between the lines of Train to Busan and Peninsula, somewhere in the middle of the two.
